Rick’s Story-Paying It Forward

Rick Obey spent his formative years at the Boys and Girls Club of Lynn, MA. His mother and father were both employees of the Boys and Girls Club and Rick and his siblings spent their afterschool time at the B&GC while their mother completed her workday as the Club’s bookkeeper. In a large family entertainment funds are extremely limited or completely non-existent and the Boys and Girls Club of Lynn filled a need, serving as a safe, gathering place to study, play and form friendships for the Obey family.

It was in this environment that Rick’s character was developed and where he learned to appreciate the rewards of education, teamwork and a job well done. With funds in short supply at home, Rick went to work. At the age of 12, he became a pool lifeguard at the Boys & Girls Club and with his incredible energy and attention to detail, he had, no doubt, also made himself useful taking on any small job or project that caught his eye. He moved on to a paper route at the age of 14 and climbed up the employment ladder to disc jockey two years later. He has never stopped. The love of learning, people skills and incredible work ethic have served him well and neither he nor any of his family has forgotten they owe much of their success as adults to the Boys and Girls Club of Lynn.

History Of Lynn Boys and Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club of Lynn has taken a lead role in the city’s youth development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances for more than 120 years. We are known for providing services and enhancing the lives of girls and boys whom other agencies have trouble building trusting relationships with. Our time is dedicated to these underprivileged youth, protecting them from our imperfect city, giving them access to quality programs and services, and teaching them how to make choices that will shape their future.
